The Yamaha outboard motor service manual downloads for the above listed models describes the service procedures for the complete engine. Follow the Maintenance Schedule recommendations to ensure that the motor is in peak operating condition and the emission levels are within the standards set by the your states/county Resources Board. Performing the scheduled maintenance is very important. It compensates for the initial wear that occurs during the life of the outboard motor.

All chapters in the Yamaha service manuals apply to the whole engine and illustrates procedures for removal & installation of components that are in detailed step-by-step fashion.

Most all service manual chapters start with an assembly or system illustration, diagrams, exploded parts view, quality pictures, service information and troubleshooting for the section. The subsequent pages give detailed procedures. If you don’t know the source of the trouble, go to the troubleshooting page for a list of causes and effects to determine the problem at the end of the manual.

TROUBLESHOOTING - GENERAL

FUEL SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING

Throttle is “rolled back” or closed, thereby actuating idle cable roll-off (disengage) switch.

The cruise module circuitry provides on-board diagnostics to help isolate any problems that might occur with the cruise system.

See Starting & Charging System Troubleshooting in Service Manual.

The ECM is monitoring voltage at ECM connector terminal 35.

This checks for voltage drops in the ECM power circuit. If a significant voltage drop is not present, condition may be caused by excessive starter current draw.

See Electrical Relays, Removal/Installation in the Yamaha Service Manual.

Plug Fouling Due to Engine Mechanical Fault.

Use the troubleshooting tables on the following pages to diagnose and locate problems with malfunctioning or inoperative instruments and gauges. For wire connections at rear of gauges refer to the applicable wiring diagram at the back of this book for further assistance.

Follow the troubleshooting procedures listed under (carbureted) or (EFI) if the engine will not start, is difficult to start or runs roughly. Also check condition of spark plug cables. Insulation on cables may be cracked or damaged allowing high tension current to short to metal parts. This problem is most noticeable when cables are wet. If poor starting/running condition persists, check resistance of ignition coil primary and secondary windings using an ohmmeter.

TROUBLESHOOTING

When the charging system fails to charge or does not charge at a satisfactory rate, make the following recommended checks.

Battery

Check for a weak or dead battery. Battery must be fully charged in order to perform any electrical tests.

Wiring

Check for corroded or loose connections in the charging circuit.

Voltage Regulator Inspection

The regulator must have a clean, tight ground connection for proper operation. Check by using an ohmmeter with one lead on the battery ground cable and the other on the regulator ground terminal (on left side ground post in front of battery). Connector plug at engine crankcase must be clean and tight.
