BRAKES 1.6 FLUID INSPECTION Check brake fluid reservoir level and condition: ● At the first scheduled service interval. ● At every 5000 mile (8000 km) service interval thereafter. ● When storing or removing the motorcycle for the season. ● Also, check for fluid leaks at every service interval.
Direct contact of D.O.T. 5 brake fluid with eyes may cause eye irritation, swelling, and redness. Avoid eye contact. In case of eye contact flush with large amounts of water and get medical attention. Swallowing large amounts of D.O.T. 5 brake fluid may cause digestive discomfort. If swallowed, obtain medical attention. Use in well ventilated area. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. (00144a) 1. See Figure 1-11. Check level in rear brake master cylinder reservoir. Level should be 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) below the gasket surface. CAUTION To prevent dirt from entering the master cylinder reservoir, thoroughly clean the cover before removal. 2. See Figure 1-12. Check level in front brake master cylinder reservoir. Level should be 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) below the gasket surface. 3. Install gaskets and covers. Tighten reservoir cover screws to 6-8 in-lbs (0.7-0.9 Nm).
After completing repairs or bleeding the system, always test motorcycle brakes at low speed. If brakes are not operating properly or braking efficiency is poor, testing at high speeds could result in death or serious injury. 4. Front brake hand lever and rear brake foot pedal must have a firm feel when applied. If not, bleed system using only D.O.T. 5 SILICONE BRAKE FLUID. See 1.7 BLEEDING BRAKES.
